Job Description:

Library Assistant I
The Hinkle Memorial Library is seeking a Library Assistant to assist in general library functions and front-line customer service. This position requires someone who is self-motivated and detail-oriented with the ability to engage with staff, personnel from other libraries, vendors, library administrators, and customers in a courteous and thoughtful manner.

Job Summary duties include but are not limited to:

  • Providing excellent customer service for patrons via Information Desk shifts and on the floor, interactions assisting faculty and students on request including help with printing.
  • Performing basic reference and circulation tasks using the Alma Library Management software.
  • Performing routine library maintenance, including managing receipt of new library materials; processing new books including entering information into electronic catalog, printing labels, attaching spine labels, stamps and protective covers; linking new books to appropriate records supplied by cataloging librarian; maintaining library materials statistics count; assists cataloging librarian in preparing budget data requests and data reports.
  • Collection and recording of fines and fees; monitoring patron fines and lost materials notifies patrons of holds, missing, or damaged materials.
  • Assisting with inter-library loans.
  • Working under supervision, may scan and collate college archival materials.
  • Participation in opening and closing the library.

Requirements:

This position is represented by the Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA).

Minimum Qualifications

Successful performance on a job-related examination. 

OR

Library Assistant 1 Promotion: One year of permanent service in a clerical or secretarial position allocated to Grade 6 or higher.

Open Competitive: a high school diploma and one year of full-time clerical experience in a library setting. 

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS) which requires one year of full-time clerical experience in a library setting.

For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.

At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges as competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
